i say just for fun 1 of the admin's puts the names into a hat and draws out random teams??

Doesn't really matter who's in what team, this one isn't exactly serious with only 5 teams involved but we will need to decide who is in what team soon so that we have time to organise for the first game.

Yeah well that's why we still need a couple of reserves for each team.

We could either do drawing out of a hat
Crap team, good team
EST time, and W/CST team
Mixed with friends and players who are proven to work well together

Notice the "lol"? It wasnt really a serious idea i put foward. There would obviously need to be some kind of system for picking the teams. Your time zone idea seems best imo.
